The Surakarta Sunanate, also known as the Kingdom of Solo Surakarta Hadiningrat Sultanate, is a historic monarchy in Central Java, Indonesia. It was established in 1745 by Pakubuwono II, a prince from the Mataram dynasty, who became the ruler of the eastern half of central Java. The Sunanate was governed by a complex system of administration that reflected traditional Javanese culture and Islamic tradition, with the Sultan serving as both a political and spiritual leader.

The Surakarta Sunanate was one of the two main Javanese kingdoms that emerged in the 18th century, the other being the Yogyakarta Sultanate. Together, these two kingdoms were known as the "Mataram Sultanates." The Sunanate was situated in a fertile agricultural region, with rice fields and plantations covering much of the surrounding countryside. The kingdom was also located near major trade routes that connected Java to other parts of Indonesia and to the wider world, making it an important center of commerce and cultural exchange. Renowned for its rich and diverse cultural heritage, which encompassed traditional Javanese arts such as gamelan music, wayang kulit (shadow puppetry), batik textiles, and traditional dance. It was also a center of Islamic scholarship and learning, with many distinguished scholars and religious leaders associated with the court.

During the struggle for Indonesian independence, numerous members of the royal family and nobility actively supported the movement.

Today, the Surakarta Sunanate's impact on Indonesian society and culture continues to be felt, with many of its cultural traditions and arts still practiced and considered essential elements of Indonesian national identity. The Surakarta Sunanate also left behind a wealth of significant historical sites and artifacts that offer insights into the kingdom's rich history and culture.
